1st Annual Emerging Financial Markets and Policy Conference - EFMP 2021

The First Annual Emerging Financial Markets and Policy Conference (EFMP 2021) was held with immense success as a virtual conference on 26th June 2021. Challenges and Opportunities Facing Emerging Financial Markets was the theme of this year’s conference. Over, 200 participants, including researchers, practitioners and policymakers, attended the conference representing countries such as the USA, Australia, Japan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Twenty-four academically rich papers were presented in eight concurrent sessions. Professor Jonathan A. Batten of RMIT University in Australia delivered the keynote address on “The Challenge of Meeting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) while Fostering Green Finance”. Moreover, Professor Batten delivered another speech on “Publishing Research in Finance”. The industry panel discussion on “Challenges and Opportunities Facing Sri Lanka and Emerging Markets” conducted with the participation of Mr. Rajeeva Bandaranaike (Chief Executive Officer, Colombo Stock Exchange), Mr. Nandika Buddhipala (Chief Financial Officer, Commercial Bank of Ceylon), Mr. Manil Jayesinghe (President, CA Sri Lanka), and Mr. Maninda Wickramasinghe (Managing Director/CEO, Fitch Ratings Lanka Ltd.) was another important session held during the conference. Dr. Manjula Wanniarachchige (University of Ruhuna) served as the coordinator of this conference.

The Sri Lanka Finance Association hosted a very successful pre-conference webinar on “Constructive Discussions” in connection with its First Annual Emerging Financial Markets and Policy Conference (EFMP 2021). The event was held on 10th June 2021 at 8.00 PM (Sri Lanka Time). The resource person was Mufaddal Baxamusa, Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, USA. The webinar focused on how to prepare and deliver an effective and constructive discussion of a research paper at an academic conference. The presentation was followed by a very fruitful interactive discussion with the participants. More than 40 participants representing Sri Lankan and other South Asian universities attended the event. The webinar was well received by the audience. Professor Lalith Samarakoon, the President of SLFA, moderated the discussion and Dr. Manjula Wanniarachchige served as the organizer and convenor of the webinar.
